Unimaginably, in 2019, Westfield residents Samantha and Miles Brown received a cancer diagnoses just months apart. On August 23, 2019, Samantha, who was five years old at the time, was diagnosed with Wilm’s Tumor, a very rare form of kidney cancer which required removal of her left kidney and twenty rounds of chemotherapy treatment. Shortly thereafter, on December 13, 2019, Miles, who was two years old at the time, was diagnosed with Burkitt’s Leukemia, a fast-growing and aggressive cancer, and he spent fifty-four straight days at Riley Hospital for Children and underwent six months of in-patient chemotherapy. Samantha and Miles were successfully treated by Dr. Michael Ferguson, a Pediatric Hematology Oncologist physician, and Dr. Alan Ladd, Division Head of Pediatric General and Thoracic Surgery, as well as many other amazing doctors, nurses, and specialists at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health. Today, both Samantha and Miles are in remission and have been four years cancer free!
These days, Samantha loves competing in cheer competitions with her Ice Team, gymnastics, tumbling, and all things Taylor Swift! Miles enjoys playing basketball, WYSI football, and golf. Both also enjoy playing with Scout, the family’s golden retriever puppy.
